Normal guy Frank Potter is forced by his wife to join a local acting group. He enters a terrifying world of hefty thespians, impromptu drama, and crazy people. Mayhem and ambulances ensue. A large Russian woman also falls on top of someone from a great height. In another even more harrowing tale, Frank wants a quiet Thanksgiving, but his dreaded sister-in-law and her French film director husband visit from Beverly Hills. Hilarity occurs, followed by shocking violence, gophers and narrow escapes. In yet another startling story, Frank decides to build a swimming pool in his backyard. Mayhem ensues, followed by more mayhem and Apache Indians.

This book by Christopher Bunn includes 3 different stories about the Potter family and their very helpful, knowledgable neighbor. While all three stories illicited giggles from me, the middle story made me laugh out loud a lot. As always, Mr. Bunn's smooth writing style and captivating story lines keep the reader well engaged from beginning to end. If you want to laugh, read these hysterically funny stories. I had a lot of good laughs, to the point that people asked me what I was reading. Worth adding to you library.
From epic fantasy to science fiction to humor, Christopher Bunn knows how to tell a story. This collection of short humorous stories is absurd, politically incorrect and hilarious. Worth the price and the time it takes to read.
This is a short collection of stories about a very stereotypical, middle-class, suburban white family. I will review each one separately
1. The Revenge of the Demented Thespians - in this story, the main character has a sarcastic and nearly misanthropic sense of humor which I enjoyed very much. I would give it 4 stars.
2. The Attack of the Crazed Environmentalists - in this story, the main character reveals himself to be obnoxiously and offensively stupid; he embodies the very image of the "ugly American" and the rest of his family is not much better. I nearly quit reading. 1 star.
3. The Night of the Thanksgiving Turkey Terror - to be honest, I was not able to give this story a fair read as I was so angered by the previous story. Some of the story was a bit over the top. I did enjoy the jab at Wagner. 3 stars.

Lovers and Lunatics is a short story collection about the Potters; in fact, subtitle for the book is the Potter Family Files, Volume 1, so maybe we will get more than one collection of stories. Anyway, this collection of stories is crazy. The humor is over the top and you question whether the husband is the lunatic of the title versus the people he meets in the stories.
The first story is about how Frank and his wife join an acting group even though Frank does n't want to join it. However, Frank decides that once he sees the level of craziness in the group, he wants to act in the play purely so that he can witness the train wreck of the play.
The next story is about Frank's bonus, which is usually just a gift certificate to some weird kind of Pizza joint. This time the bonus is money, a lot of money. After talking with the family, they decide to get a swimming pool. So, Frank talks to his next door neighbor about the project and he suggests to hire Mexicans because they don't have follow the laws or something like that. So, you can guess something goes wrong with the project.
The last story is about Frank's in-laws coming over for Thanksgiving dinner. Of course, we are introduced to the husband and wife who both appear to be as certifiable as the rest of the Potters.
If you want a really good laugh, you can't go wrong with The Potters!
